Denim Weight Guide: Ounces, GSM and Which Weight to Choose

"What GSM should my denim be?" is one of the first questions buyers ask us, and the honest answer is: it depends on the garment. Denim weight decides how a garment drapes, how it feels in Indian heat, how long it lasts and how much it costs. This guide explains the numbers so you can order the right fabric the first time.

Ounces vs GSM: the two ways denim is measured

Internationally, denim weight is usually quoted in ounces per square yard (oz). In India, most mills and traders quote grams per square metre (GSM). To convert, multiply ounces by roughly 33.9. So 10 oz denim is about 339 GSM, and 12 oz is about 407 GSM. When you compare quotes from two suppliers, make sure both are using the same unit, and ask whether the weight is measured before or after washing, because washing changes it.

The three weight classes

Lightweight denim: under about 12 oz (under ~400 GSM)

Light denim, often 4 to 10 oz, is soft and breathable. It is the practical choice for shirts, dresses, skirts, kids' wear and summer jeans. In Indian summers, a 6 to 8 oz denim shirt is far more comfortable than a heavy one. The trade-off is durability: light denim wears through faster at the knees and seat.

Midweight denim: about 12 to 16 oz (~400 to 540 GSM)

This is the everyday jeans range. Most mainstream jeans sit around 12 to 14 oz because that weight balances comfort, shape retention and life. If you are building a regular jeans line and are unsure, start sampling here.

Heavyweight denim: above about 16 oz (above ~540 GSM)

Heavy denim is stiff at first, takes time to break in and fades in sharp, high-contrast patterns. It suits workwear, jackets and premium raw-denim products. In hot climates it is a niche choice, so order it for specific products rather than a whole range.

Weight is not the only thing that matters

  • Stretch: denim with elastane (often 1 to 3%) is more comfortable and fits closer, but can bag out over time if the quality is low.
  • Weave: right-hand, left-hand and broken twill each feel and fade differently.
  • Shrinkage: unwashed (raw) denim can shrink noticeably on first wash. Always ask for the shrinkage percentage and allow for it in your patterns.
  • Width: wider fabric can mean less waste in cutting, which affects your real cost per garment.

A quick buying checklist

  1. Decide the garment first, then the weight.
  2. Ask for weight in both oz and GSM, before and after wash.
  3. Get the stretch percentage and shrinkage in writing.
  4. Request a swatch, and wash it once yourself before placing a bulk order.
  5. Confirm the minimum order quantity and lead time.

Quick answers

What is the best denim weight for jeans in India?

For everyday jeans, 11 to 13 oz (about 370 to 440 GSM) is a comfortable middle ground for Indian weather. Go lighter for summer styles and heavier for jackets.

How do I convert denim oz to GSM?

Multiply ounces per square yard by about 33.9. For example, 12 oz is roughly 407 GSM.

Is heavier denim always better quality?

No. Heavier denim is more durable, but quality depends on the cotton, the weave and the finishing. A well-made 10 oz denim can outperform a poorly made 14 oz one.

My Journey: From a Family Fabric Business to Building BizOS

By Suhail Ahmed · Shastri Nagar, Delhi People often ask me how a fabric business from Shastri Nagar ended up building software. The honest answer is that one led to the other. This is my journey so far, the parts that went well and the parts I am still figuring out. Where it started: a family business I didn't start alone. EVOMODA is a family business, and I work alongside Dilshad Ahmed and Shameem Ahmed. WhatsApp for Textile Businesses: 7 Habits to Stop Losing Enquiries

For most textile and garment businesses in India, WhatsApp is the real order book. Buyers send photos of fabric, ask for rates, negotiate and confirm, all in chat. That is convenient, but it also means enquiries get buried, rates are quoted inconsistently and nobody remembers who promised what. Here are the habits that helped us handle more enquiries without hiring more people. 1. Use the WhatsApp Business app, not personal WhatsApp The free WhatsApp Business app adds a business profile with address and hours, a product catalogue, quick replies, labels and an away message. It costs nothing and immediately looks more professional to buyers. 2. Label every chat by stage Create labels such as New enquiry , Rate sent , Sample sent , Order confirmed , Payment pending and Dispatched . Once a day, open the Rate sent label and follow up. Most lost orders are simply buyers who never got a second message. 3. Save quick replies for repeat questions Buyers ask the same things again and ag...
